Homemade Treats

fleatreatsHomemade No-Flea Treat Prevention

These treats contain Brewer's Yeast, a natural flea repellent that is also good for your dog too. Hint--they LOVE brewer's yeast as well so it's a Win-Win! I admit I also use veterinary flea preventatives but I also supplement with brewer's yeast as a special treat. Apparently it is emitted through the animals skin and fleas don't like the odor that is emitted. However, humans cannot detect an odor.

I use whole wheat flour but you can use any flour you like. I  may try coconut flour to make it grain-gluten-free. You can purchase brewer's yeast at the local health food store.

  • 2 cups oats
  • 1 cup powdered brewer's yeast
  • 1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour (or any flour substitute)
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Place brewer's yeast, oats, flour and cheese in a large bowl.

In a separate bowl, beat egg. Add egg to flour mixture and stir well. Add only enough water to make a rollable dough.

Roll dough out to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut into desired shapes.

Bake 30 minutes. Then turn oven OFF and leave biscuits in the oven until oven completely cooled down (this dehydrates the biscuits and prepares them for storage).

Yield varies, but I usually get 2 1/2 dozen from a medium dog bone biscuit cutter.
